childcare community champions project
promoting the value of childcare to parents
Developed under the DCSF/NDNA Strategic contract the Childcare Community Champions projects were established by NDNA in partnership with 5 local authorities and piloted during 2007.
The aim of the projects was to facilitate a network to promote the value of childcare and the free entitlement to parents who are not accessing formal childcare. The projects work with parent volunteers (Community Childcare Champions) who are key to communicating positive messages on the benefits of formal childcare, how to access childcare and get financial support. The Community Childcare Champion’s role was to speak with local parents not using formal childcare and to both talk about their own experiences and to answer parent’s questions and concerns about using formal childcare. The goal is to increase the number of users in a locality from areas of socio-economic disadvantage and BME groups that are currently underrepresented in formal childcare.
